Joint Committee on Human Rights report on Data Protection and Human Rights (19/03/2008)

The committee on 14 March 2008, published its 14 th report on data protection and the relationship with human rights. Recommendations confirm the principle that data sharing must be justifiable and proportionate with appropriate safeguards. Government is criticised for not giving the issue of safeguarding personal data sufficient importance when formulating primary legislation and that the role of the data protection minister is currently too limited. The report comments "the Minister has identified the cultural barrier to ensuring that personal data is adequately protected by the staff who handle it, but much more needs to be done to tackle this problem successfully. We have so far seen no evidence that the human rights champions in departments have made any impact, particularly in relation to front line staff ."
