The European Commission has pledged to take action to prevent new technologies invading the privacy of individuals, particularly by social networking sites and radio frequency identification (RFID) chips. The Information Society and Media Commissioner Viviane Reding was resolute in the Commission’s power to act against any country that does not provide adequate protections of privacy, especially for young people using social networks. The UK is already facing legal proceedings due to inadequate privacy laws for communications. The Commission believes that individuals should have control of their own personal information. For any other party to use that information, informed consent is needed. This will apply to all organisations, including institutions where staff and students should be afforded a reasonable degree of privacy.
