Proposed Harassment Law is No Breach

A new law aimed at tackling stalkers as well as those who harass individuals via text or online is being proposed by Scottish Ministers.  In particular, the Justice secretary, Kenny MacAskill, wants to make it an offence to exibit threatening, alarming or distressing behaviour towards others thus providing greater protection to victims.  The Scottish Government believes that existing legislation does not go far enough when dealing with harassment of this kind.  FE and HE institutions, as service providers, should remain fully aware of the legislation in place and the potential consequences that follow when a breach of the law occurs regarding the abuse of online services. More details on this news story can be accessed from the BBC website at: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/8526080.stm.  Alternatively if you would like to refer to the Bill please go to the Scottish Parliament website at: http://www.scottish.parliament.uk/s3/bills/24-CrimJustLc/index.htm
