A Birmingham high school has been required to sign a formal undertaking after a laptop containing the unencrypted personal details of around a thousand staff and students was stolen. The information also included sensitive personal data. The undertaking requires the school to adopt appropriate security measures (such as encryption) in relation to portable media and laptops, to make sure appropriate staff are aware of the security measures, and to make other appropriate changes to ensure theft doesn't lead to loss of personal data. More information can be found in the ICO's press release at http://www.ico.gov.uk/upload/documents/pressreleases/2009/waseley_hills_high_school_undertaking_151209.pdf
