This Briefing Paper discusses recent developments in the UK legislative framework applicable to e-commerce practices and related technologies, including the effect of the Consumer Protection (Distance Selling) Regulations 2000, and the Electronic Commerce (EC Directive) Regulations 2002 on the marketing and selling of goods and services, including educational services, via the Internet. It examines the status of electronic signatures in UK law, notably their role in the use of electronic invoicing for VAT purposes.
