The Equality Bill (04/12/2009)

On the 24 April 2009 the Equality Bill was introduced in the House of Commons and was published on 27 April with a view to achieving Royal Assent in the Spring 2010. One of the bill’s main aims is to consolidate and codify existing anti-discrimination legislation and statutory instruments i.e. equality rights governed by the terms of a single act, thus making equality law easier to understand. In addition, the bill seeks to reform and harmonise equality law, by strengthening existing legislation. It also offers new rights in relation to gender re-assignments, marriage and civil partnerships as well as tackling the pay gap between men and women and is broadening the scope of age discrimination. This article aims to remind FE and HE institutions about forthcoming changes regarding equality and diversity legislation.
