Public Lending Right could be extended to include non-print books such as e-books and audiobooks, under new proposals. Public Lending Right (PLR) is the right for authors to receive payment under PLR legislation for the loans of their books by libraries. The UK Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) has launched a consultation on policy proposals to extend eligibility for PLR to non-print books, in particular audiobooks and e-books. This consultation will be of interest to those staff at FE and HE institutions that are involved in developing and using audiobooks and e-books in teaching and learning and particularly to those in libraries that are involved in negotiating licensing arrangements. The consultation can be accessed here - http://www.culture.gov.uk/reference_library/consultations/6283.aspx - and will close on 16th October 2009.
