A professor of the Open University claimed research data files containing medical records and held on the university's server, had been accessed and changed without her consent. She made an official complaint to the O.U. who responded by saying that the data was held on a separate secure server and it was "confident that the data was not accessed by any unauthorised person." Professor Scott, however, applied for a court order. The High Court was due to hear the case but both parties have now settled the issue. This case highlights the need for institutions to ensure sensitive personal data is held securely and accessed by authorised persons only.
