Equality and Human Rights Commission

The Equality and Human Rights Commission was launched in October 2007, taking over the role and functions of the Commission for Racial Equality (CRE), the Disability Rights Commission (DRC) and the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) and assuming new responsibilities for sexual orientation, age, religion and belief, and human rights.

The Commission is a Non Departmental Public Body established under the Equality Act 2006 as a corporate body and sponsored by the Government Equalities Office.

Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) (International)

EFF is a non-profit, non-partisan organization working in the public interest to protect fundamental civil liberties, including privacy and freedom of expression in the arena of computers and the Internet. EFF was founded in 1990, and is based in San Francisco, California.

European Court of Human Rights (International)

The European Commission of Human Rights and the European Court of Human Rights are the bodies set up by the Council of Europe to enforce the provisions of the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms or European Convention on Human rights. http://www.echr.coe.int/

FAIFE/IFLA Statement on Libraries and Intellectual Freedom (International)

FAIFE is an initiative within IFLA (International Federation of Library Association and Institutions), which seeks to defend and promote the basic human rights defined in Article 19 of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It provides documentation on the actual situation concerning libraries, librarianship and intellectual freedom around the world. The original statement was made 25th March 1999.

Interights (International)

A non-governmental organisation established in 1982 to develop the legal protection of human rights through use of international human rights law. Although based in the UK, it has an international remit by providing legal advice to judges and advocates, active in international tribunals such as the UN Human Rights Committee and the European Court of Human Rights.

Liberty (National Council for Civil Liberties) (UK)

An independent non-governmental organisation which works to defend and extend individual rights and freedoms in England and Wales. Liberty pursue human rights test cases through the English Courts and the European Commission and Court of Human Rights.

Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) (International)

OHCHR is guided in its work by the Charter of the United Nations, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and subsequent human rights instruments, and the 1993 Vienna Declaration and Programme of Action. The promotion of universal ratification and implementation of human rights treaties is at the forefront of OHCHR activities.
