The Department for Business, Innovation & Skills today published its Innovation and Research Strategy for Growth. The report recognises the importance of universities, research councils and businesses to the UK's future competitiveness and outlines how government will support research and innovation through increased collaboration and investment.
Initiatives and actions identified which will be of particular interest to universities include:
- a web based publicly searchable ‘Gateway to Research' to be developed by Research Councils;
- development of an Open Data Institute;
- a principles-based framework for development, treatment and submission of multi-institutional funding bids to be developed by Research Councils UK, working with Funding Councils and discussion with individual universities and consortia;
- introduction of the EU VAT cost-sharing exemption to enable universities to ensure a VAT cost isn’t incurred when services are shared;
- response to Sir Tim Wilson’s forthcoming review of university-business collaboration to be provided by BIS;
- a new innovation voucher programme enabling small businesses to engage with universities and the wider knowledge base
