Surge in Online Defamation Cases

Online defamation cases in England and Wales have more than doubled in the last year, according to new research carried out by legal information providers Sweet and Maxwell.  The firm have cited "growth in social media" as the cause.  This highlights some of the key legal issues affecting social networking and reminds institutions that Web 2.0 publication platforms are not free from legal risks.  Institutions are further reminded of the proposals for new laws on defamation affecting England and Wales.  Amendments are currently being worked through following the close of the consultation.
