A recent ICO audit of Google has found improvements in the corporation's privacy standards. Google, which was found to have breached UK data protection legislation, signed an undertaking with the ICO in November 2010 to take various steps to improve compliance. The undertaking also committed Google to a minimum three year training plan in four areas:
· Continued and updated employee orientation programmes on Google’s Privacy Principles.
· Employee training on Google’s Code of Conduct (including privacy and protection of user data).
· Enhanced core training, particularly on responsible collection, use and handling of data.
· An employee security awareness programme, including guidance on security and privacy.
The recent ICO audit found that improvements had been implemented by Google. This highlights the importance of colleges and universities raising staff awareness of privacy and data protection obligations, particularly as this is an issue the ICO regularly considers in reaching a decision on compliance with UK data protection law.
