Freedom of Information (Amendment Bill) 2010-11

The Freedom of Information (Amendment Bill) is currently making its way through Parliament and is due to be further debated on the 18 March 2011. The purpose of the bill is to amend current freedom of information legislation by removing provisions permitting Ministers to overrule decisions of the Information Commissioner and the Information Tribunal. In addition, the bill seeks to limit the time allowed for public authorities to respond to requests involving consideration of the public interest and to amend the definition of public authorities. Further and higher education institutions are subject to the provisions of the act and as a result should remain vigilant of any changes concerning the legislation. Please keep checking the relevant section of our Law Watch pages for the latest FOI developments.
