YouTube Videos Copyright Decision

Although decided in the USA the Viacom v Google case highlights the need for institutions to have ‘take down’ procedures in place.  FE and HE institutions should have measures in place to be able to take material off websites and VLEs once they have been informed that the content it is in breach of copyright.  They must act quickly to disable, remove or block the content or become liable.   By acting quickly the likelihood of the institution being held liable for breach of copyright when users have been found to have posted unauthorised videos onto learning environments, for example, will be reduced.
