EU Commission's Telecoms Reform Package (30/11/2009)

The European Parliament has voted in favour of new and updated legislation governing Europe's telecoms industry.  The Telecoms Reform Package aims to bring more competition in relation to Europe's telecoms markets and facilitate better cheaper fixed, mobile and internet services as well as  faster internet connections for all Europeans.  In addition, new legislation will introduce data breach notification requirements forcing organisations to report data breaches particularly when personal data has been compromised.  The package should offer a better deal to consumers and organisations alike.  It has now passed all voting stages and is expected to be published into law on the 18 December 2009.  It should be incorporated into domestic laws by June 2011.  Institutions as internet service providers and data controllers should ensure that they remain up-to-date with current legislative changes and developments in this particular area of law. More information on the reform package is available at: http://ec.europa.eu/information_society/policy/ecomm/tomorrow/index_en.htm
